Common Equipment Questions

Which type of machine is best, Electric or Gas Powered?

Electric pressure washers have become quite popular in recent years.  Their main benefit is being light in weight and easily transported and they can be used by just about anyone.  Regardless of any manufacturer's claims, they are really just for light duty, home use.  They are not recommended for any type of commercial use.

Gasoline Powered pressure washers are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  They come in handy portable units to heavy duty truck mount or trailer mount units.  Most homeowners will be satisfied with the entry level portable gas powered machines sold in local home stores.  With proper care, these machines fulfill a wide variety of tasks and will last for years.

Cost of Pressure washing machines vary greatly depending upon engine size and pump models.  You may purchase a portable entry level machine from a local home store for under $300 or a commercial truck model setup for about $20,000.  See our Business guide for recommendations base on 30 years of personal experience.  Consider Insider's knowledge about these machines that no sales rep will ever share with you.

PSI = Pounds per Square Inch refers to the water pressure produced by any specific machine.

Warning, many online "authorities" will have you believe that "Bigger is Better."  That simply is not the always the truth.  The least powerful portable machines can do a world of damage if not used properly.

GPM = Gallons Per Minute refers to the number of gallons a specific machine is capable of pumping per minute.  Hint: when using a homeowner's water supply, remember you will still be limited to the water pressure/outlet size of the home regardless of what your new super powerful power washer is capable of.  A similar warning applies as to the PSI claims above.

Chemical Injection system is a very sophisticated name for a simple siphon system.**  Even the least expensive portable models will include a simple siphon capable nozzle.  This allows the user to introduce a cleaning solution to a low powered spray.

**Some high powered truck or trailer style units may provide for a chemical injection system which actually pumps the cleaner through the pumping system.  This enables spraying the chemical cleaner at high pressure.  Most experienced operators will admit that they do not recommend ever using this since the chemicals can cause damage to the pumping system.

Hot Water or Cold Water Machine?  Which is best?

Don't ever ask this question to a salesman.  Good portable cold water machines start in price around $500 or less.  An entry level Hot Water machine might run you 3 or more times that.  Wonder which one a salesman will recommend?  Click on Cold or Hot water at the top of the page for more info or purchase our Business Guide for more Inside Information that can save you from making some very expensive mistakes.
